PROTON Milestones: From the National Car Project to the Proton Saga

A milestone story is most useful when it shows how one dated event led to another. PROTON’s official history provides a detailed sequence extending from the policy discussions behind Malaysia’s National Car Project to the establishment of the company, the launch of the Proton Saga and later steps in manufacturing and engineering. Before PROTON was incorporated

PROTON’s milestone record places the earliest stage in 1979, when then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Mahathir Mohamad requested a feasibility study for a Malaysian-manufactured car. Heavy Industries Corporation of Malaysia, or HICOM, was incorporated in November 1980. In November 1982, Malaysia’s Cabinet approved the National Car Project. These events provide the institutional context for the company that followed; they should be distinguished from the later dates on which PROTON itself was formed and began producing vehicles.

1983: establishing the company

Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional was incorporated on 7 May 1983. Later that month, a joint-venture agreement was signed between HICOM, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation. The incorporation date marks the formal company milestone, while the joint venture records the industrial partnership behind the first production programme. Keeping both dates visible avoids reducing the company’s origin to a single launch ceremony.

1985–1988: the Saga and the first export steps

The Proton Saga was officially launched on 9 July 1985 as Malaysia’s first national car. PROTON’s timeline records Bangladesh as the Saga’s first export destination in December 1986. The first Saga shipment to Ireland followed in March 1988, before the model appeared at the British International Motor Show in October of that year. These dates show how the initial programme moved from a national launch into early export activity within several years.

Building manufacturing and engineering capability

Later milestones document a widening industrial base. A new research and development building in Shah Alam opened in April 1993. In 1996, PROTON rolled out its one-millionth car and acquired a controlling interest in Lotus Group International. The Proton Waja, launched in 2000, is described by PROTON as its first car to be fully developed locally. A second manufacturing plant opened in Tanjung Malim in 2003, and the company recorded the production of its three-millionth car in 2008.
